Olympics Quiz

Jesse-Owens-007Jesse and Bob compete in a 100 metre sprint race. When Jesse gets over the finish line, Bob is at 90m.

In a second 100m race, Jesse starts 10m behind Bob.

If both run at a constant speed in both races (so neither slows down),

Who wins the second race?

Hint
Assume Jesse runs the first race in 10 seconds. So Bob runs 90m in 10 seconds. For the second race…
Answer
Jesse also finishes the second race in first place.

Assume Jesse runs the first race in 10 seconds. So Bob runs 90m in 10 seconds.

For the second race, Jesse takes 11 seconds to finish 110m. After 11 seconds, Bob is at 99m (as he runs at a constant speed of 9 m/s). Therefore Jesse wins by one metre. Go Jesse!

Stating the obvious here, but I enjoy riddles & puzzles. Anyone else also struggling with seemingly simple 5th grade math problems?
